These days, we all know one such lady, The Dowager Countess of Grantham. Like a breath of fresh air she sails through Downton Abby leaving zingers, embarrassed youth and dropped jaws in her wake.

The question of whether is is possible to speak one's mind without hurting the delicate feelings of those around one is another matter. With some of these ladies it is probably best to leave your sensitive feelings with the butler but you might want to keep your gloves on just in case.
P.S. Apropos of nothing more than candid people with good hair, we recently stumbled upon this delightful Jack Donaghy Insult Generator. We hope you enjoy it. Happy Weekend.

Maggie Smith played an awful character with a similar name (the Countess of Trentham) who spoke her mind very rudely in Robert Altman's brilliant 'Gosford Park'.
Didn't you just love the conversation she had with Edith -stop whining and find something to do. The quip about gardening. I believe she is my favorite part of Downton.
I love the Dowager, but even more so after her response to Sybil's death. Jack--well, no on sends a zinger like he does!
Alex, So glad you're still around. I date my Clive Owen interest to 'Gosford Park.' They were a nasty bunch though, weren't they? And remember that awful little American from Hollywood? Kate, how about her Branson strategy in this most recent - she's just brilliant and kind too. Jane, we need to send Edith to Wellesley College!
