Winter weather fun

As temperatures hovered in the teens last week, we weren't thinking about manners much and we weren't posting either. We were just trying to figure out how to weather the wearying cold.

As an adopted New Englander, I've learned to embrace the family ski trips and pond skating but when I first saw this ice orb project on pinterest, I knew I had found something that could make me really love cold weather.

I was more excited than my children as we filled balloons with water and food coloring. And the thrill of peeling off the balloon was well worth the wait, not to mention the risk of color-stained gloves.

 
And now the roads are steaming and the snow is melting along with those ice orbs. Feeling sad to see the weather warm up, I know I have truly become a yankee. Now I'm just waiting for the weather to drop below freezing again so we can try ice bubbles.

Friday Frivolity: Tea Towel Time

After a cold, gray and drizzly week in Boston, we decided to bring you something pretty, light, spring-ey this Friday. So, we present a lovely Esty shop, Giardino, which features hand printed linen fabrics, home decor and paper goods. My favorite are the tea towels. I'm not sure I could bring myself to put these to heavy use in my kitchen but they would make a fine hostess present or accessory at a dinner party.

The pillows are equally lovely, which might explain why I have not managed to pick out exactly what to buy, despite the fact that I pinned these on pinterest months ago.

Friday Frivolity: Pinterest

This week, one of us has been so obsessed with a new website, that she has not managed to write a single blog post.  How could that be? How could I not find the time to laud the emerging revolt against homework, comment on combating recipe clutter, or ponder if obsessing about a child’s happiness dooms him to misery? What could possibly be more interesting than raging about the lot of the suburban mother?  Well, take a look at Pinterest.

On Pinterest, one can collect images from anywhere on the internet by “pinning” them to your "pinboard." Tag it with a comment or two, and thus assemble an online visual catalogue of decorating ideas, crafty things, books to read, beloved shoes, vacation destinations, whatever.  I might even say it's kind of like a mixture between facebook, tumblr, and Twitter, if I knew anything about Twitter. 

The best part, of course, is social: connecting with friends to see what they’re pinning, or scrolling through the boards of people who are more stylish, sophisticated and better connected. Since each pin has a link back to its original source, browsing through pinterest can lead to some of the funkiest corners of the internet.

Just what every modern mother needs: another way to fritter away hours online. Impossible to resist, when images and ideas like these await: 

craft projects, 

lighting ideas,

whimsical toys,

beautiful kitchens,

and party ideas.
