Spandex

What a wonderful invention! Yet, under no circumstances should any mother expose her spandex covered bottom to the world at the grocery store, library or school pick up. Would she show up at these places wearing just a pair of pantyhose or a bathing suit? We hope not. Unless engaged in physical activity, a mother, well mannered or not, should ensure her spandex clad bottom is covered by a long sweater, trench coat or simple sweatshirt tied around her middle. Better yet, once her activity has ended the well mannered mother should shower and put on regular clothing, time permitting.

Ha Ha. So I guess this also applies to all those times when you don't have time to shower before school drop off and you pull on some work out clothes so you can pretend you're going to the gym, when really you're just headed back home to clean up the kitchen and take a shower.

Or, as a friend repeated to me once, "Just because they make it, don't mean you have to wear it!" That fits with many materials and styles besides Spandex.

Gives CYA a whole new meaning...

Agreed. Thanks, Liz, for this post.

I actually have a whole section dedicated to Mommy Chic on my site -- www.dailyoutfit.net -- full of lots of lovely alternatives to spandex!

between the nursery school drop off, pre-school drop off, horse ride, grocery shopping, nursery school pick up, lunch, nap, & pre school pick up I am lucky to have time to work out.....I will just have to offend. so sorry!

Oh My.... sounds "crazy busy" to me!

I can relate to the busy anonymous mommy however, just because you need to spend your day in workout clothes does not mean that you have to look like an 80s throwback with VPL. I think it's completely appropriate to run errands in body SKIMMING (not hugging) lycra-type pants and a cute hoody. Visit the Athleta website if you're not sure what I'm talking about. Nothing shiny. Nothing that bulges. And for god's sake, get some Hanky Pankys!

OK, is this one directed at me? There is probably only one day of the week that I am actually not in the stretchy stuff! I was waiting for this to appear on your site :-) Tomorrow nite, entertaining 20 for dinner, lucky if I actually have a chance to shower. But I PROMISE to change out of my spandex :-)
Love this Liz!!!! Keep them coming!

LOL! Yes it's crazy busy and to top it off I often offend in two types of spandex some days! Riding tights/jods and workout capris.

two words: yoga pants!

Well, riding tights are form fitting so again will just have to ofend....
I love Athleta and Title 9 but I prefer modern fit Nike capri's for running. Not going to run 6 mi in loose pants.....however I do love skorts! So handy for butt coverage pre/post run:-)

Riding tights are awesome as long as they fit properly. No VPL (see the comment about Hanky Pankys) and you needn't worry. In fact, my guess is most of the other parents at drop-off will be jealous.

A women at my daughters (private) school liked to walk around in a sports bra and shorts at various tennis matches.Well, I guess shorts... once I saw the bra I did not look down. my daughter and I still talk about it 2 years later. It also comes up at any parents meeting and especially at any class cocktail party... really spandex in public... Really sport bra alone! um, you forgot your other cloths... xx lydia
